Enlisting after AFROTC disenrollment

I am an AS300 currently waiting on hearing if I will be disenrolled from AFROTC. My commander said he gave me a Recommendation of 3 on my DD785. Long story short, he just doesn’t feel like my leadership skills are where they will need to be to be an officer next year. I asked him if I could enlist and he said I shouldn’t have any issues. I’m non scholarship. I came in the program as a 250 directly out of high school due to duel enrollment credits. Needless to say, as a crosstown POC, I had some issues as a flight commander and running my flight.

I’ve done nothing illegal. I been in contact with the recruiter since the process started and got an 88 on my ASVAB. I have an associates degree.

Has anyone been through something similar.

If you have your AS/AA and really only have two more years of college I would pursue getting a degree first. I was enlisted and in the same boat as you/very similar. I chose to enlist when, if I buckled down for two more years, would have graduated and then got into the USMC as an officer. I already had that in the plan with PLC and one last signature but still chose to go enlisted. I don't know the full context of your situation but if you have the capability to complete your degree that should be the primary focus. Just my .02

FWIW, backstory for this individual is here.

Lots of answers in the previous thread, so might be worth reviewing before replying to avoid giving duplicate advice.

Good luck, OP.

I’m just trying to get a clearer picture here because I’m was gonna be relying on USAA loan Id take in May to finish up. Plus at this point I’ve found an enlisted AFSC I’d much rather do than be a CO.

Please thoroughly research the current terms of the USAA and NFCU career loans. I believe the ROTC version is for contracted cadets with PMS/PNS approval. The payback rate is predicated on expectation of a commission after graduation and income at the O-1, O-2 and O-3 paygrades for the loan repayment period . Any defaulting of the loan terms can result in the APR jumping to a much higher rate, if you are eligible for the loan. My info may be dated, but please research now in case you have to develop alternate plans.

I applaud your willingness to serve and wish you success as your path unfolds.

Airman, have you spoken the Army ROTC recruiting officer on your campus?

I have heard of AFROTC candidates who have not done well enough on the required testing successfully make the move to Army.

+1 to AROTC-dad. I know Navy Option folks who figured they weren't getting a scholarship and made the switch. AROTC was glad to scoop them up.

@kinnem and @AROTC-dad , a 3 on a DD785 is pretty hard to overcome for commissioning into any branch. Enlistment is probably the best COA at this point.

Also to get that USAA career starter loan, you have to show proof of commissioning. Impossible to get otherwise. OP may be talking about a different loan from USAA.

Tbpxece, you are correct. After reading the various codes for a Form DD-785, a rating of three is certainly NOT an attractive prospect that another program would stick their neck out for.

Still, I thought it couldn't make things worse to have a chat with the Army ROO.

Do any of you think I’ll run into many issues enlisting? According to my Commander it’s not a defective character trait or illegal issues that pushed me out. I have a memorandum that I created explaining my situation entirely to explain what happened. I got an 88 when I tested for ASVAB and I got in contact with my recruiter immediately when it all started.
