I'm thinking of bailing

Almost 1200 showing up for daunting things, raising their hands, saying “I DO” in a chorus of shipmates.
Did the detailers once again out-shout the plebes when barking “I DO”? Or did the plebes get the better of them this time?

It was weird. I did get the detailer “I DO” but I didn’t get my favorite “full speed ahead”. It felt like the entire ceremony was abbreviated. Possibly due to air quality. Don’t know for sure.

Off topic: at what point to do we start saying Go Navy, Beat Air Force? I mean, anyone else notice Army slipping?
Where is Army slipping? Didn't they just beat Navy in football in 5 of the last 7 seasons? Heck, Coach Ken's not here anymore largely due to that.

NCAA sports have been engrossed by the greed that pervades our society. Self over service! All service academies are fighting an uphill battle in competition and recruitment and retention of quality athletes.

> The mere thought of shifting to "Beat Air Force" is sacrilege to the thousands of graduates who have gone before the current classes. I don't know the current culture at USNA now, but back in the day "Beat Army" was drilled in our heads from the first moments of Plebe Summer. We sounded off every time we squared a corner in Bancroft Hall, and we could compete with the Bacon thread with stories of antics during the week before the Army Navy game. The Army-Navy rivalry is pervasive in everything at USNA ... and IMO, the Navy-Air Force rivalry doesn't even register. In fact, thats one of the ways I get under the skin of Air Force guys --- act as if they are the forgotten little brother . BEAT ARMY -- FOREVER !

Lol that was my attempt to take a dig at army. ;)

It caught gannonfan. Though if he is a Rich Gannon fan, I might feel bad.

I've been a Blue Hens fan for my whole life, even attended games in the womb. Rich Gannon was without a doubt the greatest QB to ever come through Newark (and that includes a pretty good guy by the name of Flacco). Both had wins over Navy in their careers, with Gannon's coming at the hands of Heisman-hopeful Napolean McCallum way back in the '80's. My first actual Navy game, and I've been a fan ever since (although obviously still root for the Hens when they matchup with the Midshipmen).

I loved Rich Gannon. Saw him against the Eagles. Got into an argument with former SU coach Dick MacPherson when I said Gannon was good enough to win the Super Bowl for the Vikings.

Those Vikings years were painful. To sit behind an aging Kramer was one thing, but then to be yanked from the starting role of first place team at the time and to be replaced by ESPN's Sean Salisbury was perhaps one of Denny Green's worst decisions ever, and he had quite a few in his time. Schottenheimer didn't know what he had with him either once he was on the Chiefs and playing behind Grback. To Gruden's credit, he knew what Gannon could give him and that NFL MVP award was just rewards for a tortuous career path up to that point. Only wish Callahan would've changed the signals and terminology in that disastrous Super Bowl loss, considering Gruden knew every play the moment they signaled it in.

Navy has won the Star Competition against Army almost every year in recent memory.

This past year, Navy won the star in 14 out of 24 sports

Navy has won the star series for 39 out of the last 45 years, 2 years were ties and Army won a whopping 4 times over the last 45 years.

But how is that slipping if it's been the case for 45 years? And while all sports certainly matter, you do have to admit that football has an outsized influence on the rivalry. People aren't making hotel plans and such and scrambling for tickets for things other than football.

I know plenty of folks who make hotel plans for basketball, Lacrosse and lots of others. Army/Navy Mens Soccer is held in Philly and is a big deal. Clearly, you haven't been to one of the other Army/Navy sports competitions or you wouldn't dismiss them so handily.

First off I want to say I've been on the forums for along time learning about noms and appointments. I was lucky enough to receive an appointment to the class of 2027 and I am now here in Annapolis for I-day on Thursday but honestly, like the title says, I'm thinking of bailing and going back home. I'm really worried that it's not what I expect, that I'm too young to choose something like this right now when I barely know anything about life! I don't understand what makes me special enough to ever lead people in warfighting. I'm scared I'm going to fail someone. I'm just really scared. I'm here alone because my parents don't really support my decision. I've been on here long enough to know some of you guys must have been scared before you started. What did you do about it? How did you get over it? How did you get over your doubts about your ability to handle the challenges and be good enough to lead people?

Thanks. I just don't know where else to ask for help.
@Plebe2be. I applaud! I think you are very very brave. You came to Annapolis despite parents not supporting you. I commend you for what you have achieved and who you are. You have earned this! You took no one’s spot. This is yours. You already demonstrated character by being honest to your self and to others on this forum.

I hope you made it to the I-Day. You came so far. You should give it a chance for the next 2 years. Be dedicated and persevere. You’ll be surprised there are many more like you on I-Day and at the Yard from 4/C to 1/C. Get to know them and many others who will become your brothers and sisters for life! You will inspire them and they will inspire you.

The Naval Academy community is your family. Ready to help you if you ask for it. If you need mentorship this place is it! Everyone here is ready to be your friend and family. Some may say things on this forum without knowing your circumstances. Don’t mind them. Trust yourself, you came this far.

Go Navy, Beat Chair Force!

Parents don’t always know how to support when it isn’t how we envisioned our kids path. Last year, I witnessed the opposite of your situation. A plebe who DORed right at the beginning of the AC year and the parents were unsupportive of that decision. Plebe had plenty of support from others including their company mates. You will have the same! There is a whole community out there supporting you already and they will continue. Hell, I’ll adopt you in the sense of any support you need. Send me your plebe address and I’ll support you through notes and care packages.
This is one of the sweetest posts I've ever read. What a beautiful offer, and I hope this plebe takes you up on it.

You are an ass.
While this might be the reaction many have wanted to post, pause.

Does the poster deserve your attention? Does their contribution to the OP help or hinder?

I suggest a journey to the cocktail or bacon thread as a means of venting our frustrations with non helpful posts.

Cheers. And I toast you with crispy bacon.
