Naval Academy Summer Seminar 2009

Thanks!

Of course...I wouldn't be a real Louisianian if I didn't. Great Cajun town.

You'd be surprised once you leave La. how many folks never heard of Breaux Bridge. But they heard of Ron Guidry (Yankees) and Ali Landry (Ms. USA) who are from there.

When I lived there the population was around 2500. I think it's about 3 or 4 times that now. But every year at the Crawfish Festival it jumps up to more than 100K. Drives my mom nuts.

Still waiting to hear about summer seminar. Does anyone know a phone number to call? The admissions phone number is just an automated message.

hey again

BAD NEWS TODAY :(

talked to admissions and they told me i was not acccepted. not even waitlisted. honestly, very discouraging. i've been working my entire high school career to get into this program, and they don't even deem me worthy of the wait list.

i spoke with my regional counselor: which made me feel worse/better at the same time. he reviewed my application, and told me he honestly could not tell me anything to improve (except that test scores can virtually ALWAYS be raised). He said I was a very strong and competitive candidate for admission to USNA (team captain, club president, 3 sport varisty athlete, club officer, student government position, almost 300 hrs of community service, many other leadership positions, high gpa in honors/ap courses- including calc bc, well above average test scores, highly competitive high school, etc etc etc)

BUT I did not meet criteria they were looking for in NASS. he said my strong app was far better suited for the academy. and that they have "virtually nothing to do with eachother". he also said "only about 20 to 25% of NASS attendees will recieve appointments".

still. i am discouraged and a bit confused. admin counselor said that if i was from any other area i would have gotten in. if he can't tell me what to improve, how can i ever get into the academy, when i'm not even wait listed??

also, i was accepted to USAFA and USMA Summer Seminars....it makes me feel like they want me more than Navy does (even though I've always leaned towards Navy). So while I will still pursue an appointment to USNA, I can't help but feel a bit more "liked" by USAFA and USMA.

ok. sorry. that was long winded.

but i was wondering what you guys think: admin counselor said they use NASS as more of a recruiting tool to reach out to kids who they think may not be "on the college track" or have not really "considered the academy". what do you think about this? does this give "strong candidates" who are not accepted a fair shot and good view of the academy?

....just thinking....

well, i've heard from everybody everywhere people who got in and didn't that the summer seminar has absolutely nothing to do with getting in to the actual academy, besides the fact that the application for nass is the same as the preliminary app for actually going to the academy.
i mean, i pale in comparison to your stats so don't get discouraged :) i mean, i'm not a failure who's not considering college or anything, and i have good grades/scores/extracurriculars so i don't think it's necessarily for people who aren't "on the college track"

good luck!

Seriously, don't be discouraged.

Our son did not get into NASS, and he's now almost done with his plebe year. He'll be a NASS detailer/squad leader this summer. :)

You can only make yourself into your best self. You have no control over what they're looking for in NASS candidates. Be assured that rejection from NASS has little to do with acceptance to USNA.

still nothing...

if i havent heard anything AT ALL by now whats that usually mean?

We have in our immediate circle of acquaintances (Detroit and suburbs) four students who applied on the very first day. All received an acknowledgment of having completed the application process correctly and yet not a single one of them has received any news about their application. No email, no snail mail. Nothing.

I have no idea what any of it means.

getting nervous

I have still not received any notification as to my acceptance or rejection. I believe that I am qualified (3/303 class rank, 4.5 weighted GPA, 220 PSAT, 2180 SAT, community service and service clubs, two varsity athletics). My friend in Maryland (I am in PA) was accepted and he does not do nearly as well in school. I emailed USNA on 22 April and they told me they are in the process of notifying applicants. I thought it was "no later than mid-April."
Is this normal?

The nail biting continues.

from what I have gathered from this site, PA is a VERY competetive state. Yeah, you might be an awesome person for the academy, but the SS is generally more focussed on geography and equal representation. It sounds dumb, but it's the truth.

Keep trying! If I were you, I would be calling non-stop lol

Hey! I'm from PA as well. What district are you?

Is Illinois a competitive state? I talked to someone in admissions at an online college chat room, and I believe he did say that Illinois was a fairly competitive state.

Anyone from IL make it into NASS? I am still waiting for any contact or information about whether I got in or not. However, I was accepted into both USMA and USAFA summer sessions.

M19,

I'm not from IL but I am from WI and live close to the border. I got accepted to NASS in March. I don't know about the competitiveness, but I would think our area would be geographically underrepresented, especially compared to MD and PA. Hang in there, hope you get news soon!

I'm also from Illinois (10th district). Not sure of the competition levels of the state, but i know 10th district is hard-core. I also was accepted to both ASAFA and USMA summer seminars and have not heard either way from Navy. Kind of disappointing... Someone from my school has been accepted to NASS so i figure he represents my geographical area and i'm not going.
I've emailed my regional director and the admissions@usna.edu and have not gotten a reply. I think I will have to call and be assertive if i want to go.

I would think that MD would be very competitive as well with its close proximity to the academy.

Try webmail@usna.edu. They tell you to contact them at that address when you get your confirmation message stating that they received your application. I got a response from that.

Two more days will put any answer firmly in May and not "mid-April" for four of our Midwest students who applied in early February...

(Fingers drumming the desktop...)
