NROTC First Board Results

Just got some updates from the home office. There were two boards this month, and the results from the first board are the ones being sent out now. The results from the 2nd board will be sent out by the 8th of February.

Nearly everyone who was selected, should have received a congratulatory email from Naval Service Training Command. On the upside, no one has been "de-selected", which means the results are likely very close.....too close to rule someone out yet. I put this out because I know some of you are constantly updating websites or checking email. My sense is that those emails have already been sent.

By the way, I am now heading off to smoke my cigar.
Curious as to what you'll be smoking. I used to be a daily cigar smoker. I miss it but dare not do it anymore. I would like to live vicariously through you. 😄

I am a big fan of Rocky Patels. And there is a great cigar lounge near the campus and whatever specials they are running, I try those from time to time. But now, the Mids eager for news are camping out near the cigar lounger, so I am heading off to a clandestine location for some peace and quiet.

DS is now a fan of torpedo Romeo and Juliets from Nicaragua (blue label). A Nuclear sub capt turned him on to them on the bridge in the Pacific at night. Great recruitment tool, worked for a little while until he got into a plane.

I found them online and got him a few for Christmas for celebratory times with fellow MIDN. And a super cool 'case' with cutter and zippo. Not going to become a 'smoker' for sure.

@GWU PNS good luck making your escape. Maybe pull the fire alarm???? (JK)

Fortunately, the Midshipmen have their priorities straight. It's Friday afternoon, and the staff was thinning out. My Gunnery Sergeant came to the rescue and called my office asking if there was anyone around to help him restack the rifles and take out the trash. And......poof, they all disappeared.

I was a Robusto fan myself simply because they looked good on me. ;) If I had a lot of time I'd get a Churchill maduro of some sort. I generally loved Maduro wrappers when I wasn't smoking my Romeo et Julietta Robusto go to. Ahhhh those were the days.

Capt Myers, My DS' application landing/status page has had the College Preference missing for about a week. Reading tea leaves? Damn I'm biting my nails like Squidmom :)
Good question - my son’s also has shown that for a couple weeks, the landing page changed so no longer shows school selections link but instead says it’s at NETC for final selection and processing… but it seems like if he’s not selected or rejected yet that he’d still be able to change schools listed or order…

So, without reading too much into the webpage phraseology, because those words tend to be conjured up by an IT tech who doesnt know the process......once a selection decision is made by NSTC, the next wicket is for Naval Education and Training Command to make the actual placement decision on which college. That involves budget considerations as well as applicant's choices. Once NETC takes that over, the website options for colleges gets frozen or grayed out.

It sometimes has a glitch if a person is part of another program such as ISR or Nurse. Not sure if that is what's happening here.

Good Evening All, Just found this great forum. My son is still waiting on a Navy Nurse Option decision.
Was "Board Ready" for Jan 10th-14th Board, but are Nurse Option's looked at every board.
He was already accepted to Penn State (Direct Admit Nursing - Out of State)
Any assistance would be great.
Thanks
Jim D
From what I heard, the Nursing boards don't follow the same timeline as Navy-option scholarships (I believe they are chaired by Nurse Officers). I have no idea when the next one will take place, but good luck to your DS and hopefully he'll hear soon!

To clarify for Nurse Options, and these frequently get confused. There is an NROTC Nurse Option available, and for that, candidates follow the process outlined by Naval Service Training Command.

Details outlined here: https://www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/NROTC/Nurse/

For this option, a candidate follows most of the standard Naval Science courses and participates with the typical Battalion routine. I currently have 4 of these Midshipmen with our unit.

Then there is the Nurse Candidate Program or NCP. To be clear, this does not follow the NROTC process. This is handled by the medical community and a candidate can attend universities that do not have an NROTC unit assigned. If I had to make a rough comparison, I would say that the NCP is similar to OCS.....a person may be nearly complete with their nursing degree plan and have a desire to be a Navy nurse. They would follow the process outlined here: https://www.med.navy.mil/Accessions/Nurse-Candidate-Program/
You can actually apply for NCP up to the age of 42.

So, that might not make everything clear, but I wanted to make sure we weren't mixing apples and oranges. I have sat on several boards with Nurse Option applications. They are separate and distinct from NCP.

Capt Myers is spot on. We are all over the Nurse Candidate Program if my DS does not get the NROTC Nurse Option Scholarship. My DS is already a Florida Bright Futures Scholar and FULL RIDE to any Florida state school, but Penn State is his dream school but no Penn State without Navy help. If he has to, he will apply for NCP during his sophomore year at whatever Florida school. It's $10,000.00 paid at signing than $1000.00 per month for 2 years. For a $34,000.00 total. After graduation 5 weeks Officer Development School (ODS) then fleet assigned.

We’re in the same boat( no pun intended). My DS is eyeing both the Nurse Option and the NCP route. Just like my current AFROTC kid, they understand the very first question to answer is “do you want to serve”? That answer better be yes, and then NCP becomes a very viable alternative to NROTC.

Is anybody aware of when the most recent board results will release? Have the second January board decisions already come out, or are they expected to come out sometime this week or next?

Had an interesting conversation with one of my Mids this morning, as he walked up to me excitedly with a young lady at his side (she was not a Midshipman)

Him: Sir! I just got a call, and I have been offered an appointment at USNA. (he was one of my 3 noms this year)
Me: That's awesome!! So, have you decided what happens if you are offered NROTC?
Him: Well, I have some things to think over. There is one consideration I am going through........then he glances slightly off to his right where the young lady remains.
Me: Ahh, so you are pondering if you are ready to give up some of those on campus benefits and freedoms?
Him: So, I need to discuss some things with my ummm, my ummm, friend here.........
Her: OH MY GOD!!! All I have heard about for the past 3 months is you going to the Academy. Don't you DARE walk away from this because of me.......Proceeds to Stare Intently at the nervous young man.
Him: Well, I think I made my choice sir.
Me: Well, that's great. I am glad you were so decisive. And by the way, I'd try to keep her around.....she seems to be a very forward thinker and has your best interests at heart.
Him: Just Grins

So mark that one in the books. A bit sad he won't be with us, but he is heading to the place he has always wanted. I just hope he made it home ok and that she didn't clock him once I left visual range.

Great story. He will be one of those who can easily be a positive influencer for NROTC to those he counsels down the road about ways to become a Navy or Marine officer. He can also counter inaccurate impressions or stereotypes of ROTC midshipmen once he is at USNA. Win-wins all around.

He will also figure out how to have a love life at USNA, and it sounds like his “friend” has the right stuff in the maturity and resilience category.

There is a chance that some notifications will come out tomorrow, but more likely next Monday or Tuesday.
Capt Myers Sir, Are you speaking of notifications of the board that concluded on Jan 28th? Also, see another board convening tomorrow and ending Friday, Feb 11th, any insight if Nurse Option applicants will get a look?
Thanks

Correct....the 2nd board in January is the one that should be reporting out this upcoming week. I believe there may have been a couple nurse options on the last one and a couple more this month.
