NROTC ISR - Impact on Academy Appointments

My DS has been invited to an Immediate Scholarship Reservation (ISR) interview. If that goes well - and he meets the requirements - it is my understanding that he could be offered an ISR - which is a binding contract to accept the Navy ROTC Scholarship. My question is - how does / would this affect his opportunities for an Appointment to any of the Academies? He has applied to USNA, USAFA and USMMA. We are awaiting MOC Nom results and then Appointment announcements. Does accepting the ISR remove him from consideration? Does an Academy Appointment trump the ISR and allow him an "out?" Thanks for the advice!

My DS last week was awarded NROTC and it specifically said in his information that it has no bearing on accepting other appointments and/or ROTC scholarships. In fact, it said it was non-binding. I also had asked this question, answer was quite clear. It was NOT an ISR. It was a round one award. Good luck!
 
ISR's or NROTC regular scholarship awards can and should be accepted immediately as they are non-binding.

If a candidate is later appointed to an SA, he or she can opt out of the scholarship at that time.
 
DS was an ISR recipient in fall of 2014, and once that occurred, he made the decision to halt his pursuit of a nomination to an academy. To this day, he feels as though that was the right decision.
 
Slightly off topic, but you can accept and use your NROTC scholarship your freshman year without a service commitment. If you decide the NAVY or NROTC is not for you prior to starting your second year of college, there is not scholarship payback and no service commitment.
 
A question: is receiving a ROTC scholarship something that is significant that should be added to academy applications? In their activities records sections? DS brought his up at his nomination board interviews this weekend....what about the academies?

The receipt of ROTC Scholarships have no bearing on the Academy Applications and you do not get extra points toward your candidate score for them.
 
I wouldn't bother. I wouldn't have mentioned it at the nom boards either but that's water over the dam.

Thanks and good to know! He mentioned as it came up as a question "whats your plan B", so that's what triggered the question about academies.
