I understand that if a scholarship midshipman drops the NROTC program after their sophomore year they either have to pay back tuition or go on active military service in enlisted status upon graduation. I’m wondering: with the latter option, will the student get to choose the enlisted career they will pursue or will the Navy assign them an enlisted career? (For example: If a MIDN wants to pursue SEAL selection but instead gets a Surface Warfare Officer assignment in the fall of their senior year, can they then drop the program and sign a SEAL Challenge Contract as an enlisted service member without having to repay tuition?) Thank you and have a great day!

Talk to your unit Admin. I'd start with the class advisor and possibly the unit XO. There are a lot of questions here that I think a frank sitdown with your advisor would address.

Agree with poster above. OP, you may find the attached and following official link http://www.netc.navy.mil/nstc/NS TC _Directives/instructions.html helpful. Not sure if attached is the very latest but it should help you understand the general process.

And just to clarify, the repayment obligation kicks in at the start of sophomore year, not after it. ROTC only has a one year free trial. Service academies have two years.

You will almost certainly be asked to repay the tuition and not be offered a chance to enlist as a form of payback. As I recall they expect to be repaid within 5 years but that might be negotiable.

Again, you only get one year to decide. So at the end of year 1, you have to quit if you don't want to go further. If you start year two and then quit , then it when you are on the hook for repayment or enlisting.

@W3046 hi new person.

Which is stronger? Your aversion to being a SWO or desire to attempt BUDS?
