Question About Leadership

Hello there! I was looking through the USNA’a class profile, and I have a very important question. I saw that 66% of candidates are student body leaders. My school had the options of either having eighth period as a student body leader or as a JROTC leader. I chose to spend my eighth period as a JROTC leader throughout high school. Will the academy look down on me for this, or will they understand that a lot of people can’t do both student body and JROTC leadership. Besides not being Student Body Leader, I check nearly all of the blocks in the USNA class profile. However, not checking this block worries me. Thanks for the responses!!!

My DS, now a 2/C was never in student government. He was one of the Wrestling team captains and an Eagle Scout. I think everyone's application looks different depending on their individual strengths.

Thank you for the answer! I’m not an Eagle Scout either (biggest regret of my high school career) but I have had plenty of other leadership opportunities and I hope it cuts it. Fingers crossed!

I think "student-body leaders" can be interpreted in a multitude of ways... I know leadership is great and every SA wants to see it, but I don't think you have to specifically be Student Council President to have a chance. I have never once been apart of Student Gov't/Council, and I received an appointment. Just my thoughts :)

Thanks parachutepanda! That’s great to hear! Congrats on receiving an appointment so early by the way! If I may ask, what SAT’s/ACT’s/Rank got you in? Thank you!

Will tell you what a highly regarded SA admissions consultant (and SA alum) told us: The title only gets you so far. You need to be able to explain in your interview (e.g. with B&G Officer for USNA) what kind of real impact you made on the organization or community. In other words, how did you leave it a better place than when you arrived? Show how you identified an issue, devised a solution, rallied others to the cause, and led them to execute the solution. That’s real leadership, not just winning an election or holding a title.

Thank you so much for the advice! I wish I heard this earlier, but I am overjoyed because on my BGO interview I talked about a problem (school getting rid of computer science classes) and my solution (start computer science club & start laptop drive for kids). I should have emphasised this more however, but my BGO definitely noted it, and I plan to do so with my remaining senators interview. Thank you!
