So you just won an AROTC Scholarship- what now.

Guaranteed - No, Very likely -Yes. Many 1st Board winners have the same issue. Cadet Command will work with you on transferring the scholarship in the event that you change your mind or get an acceptance to a school. Nothing you do right now is binding. Good luck and congratulations on your scholarship!
Thank you very much, sir! That's great to hear! I appreciate it, and I'll continue to ask questions as I run into them. 👍

I haven't decided where I want to attend out of my top three schools, and I have been accepted into all three. I won't know if I will receive any merit scholarships from those schools before November 28, when I need to send in my Letter of Intent. Basically, I don't have enough information as of right now to decide where I want to go. My question is this: If I put down one school and send the response back to Cadet Command via my Letter of Intent, is it safe to assume that I would be able to transfer the scholarship to a different school out of my top three fairly easy? I have read all the Additional Information on the portal, but I can't seem to find if it clarifies whether it is a guarantee/easy process if I want to transfer my scholarship. I might have missed something, so please hit me over the head with knowledge if need be. Thank you so much, and congratulations to my fellow winners out there! :)
Wait. If you got a 4-year, why are you needing to wait for merit aid? Maybe call your top three to see if R/B help is offered? Or, maybe you’re hoping to attend a state school and will use your AROTC scholarship for the R/B? If that’s the case, ask the ROO if historically, 4-years get merit aid.

I know of one case several years ago, in which a cadet received both a 4yr AROTC scholarship and a full tuition (in state) merit based scholarship as an out of state student. Both amounts were deposited in the student's account for 8 straight semesters. He only lived in a dorm for one year and the dorm fee was subtracted from the account. After that, the University simply cut and sent out a check for the surplus balance.

It was not expected and was never questioned.

All schools handle the comingling of scholarship funds differently. Montana State its own formula. Many schools ask for a full accounting of all scholarships before awarding any merit/need based assistance so as not to double up. Some have a defined formula such as awarding R/B assistance to xROTC scholarship winners. Some do neither.

That’s amazing! Although DS’s school kicked in for a big portion of R/B, keeping the excess $35k/year scholarship (that they rescinded due to AROTC $) would have been nice LOL.

That would be more typical of Privates and the high dollar publics.

This was a public University with (at the time) the lowest tuition in the Big 10. They also offered in state tuition to a number of surrounding states and even to a Canadian province. It is not "Public Ivy", but they aggressively recruited high achievers which the "Public Ivies" don't have to.

Good question! Based on my research and the questions I have asked financial aid at several universities, they view the ROTC Scholarship as just another outside scholarship. I will be able to stack it with other merit scholarships. I already have been invited to apply for early decision to a few Presidential Fellows' Scholarships, which would cover 100% of tuition, room, and board. In this case, I could basically pocket the $10,000 a year from ROTC.

My DS is a recent 4 year AROTC winner and has also applied to USMA. We are also facing the 28 Nov deadline. What happens if he accepts the scholarship this month, then gets an appointment to USMA at a later date?

At what point is the DODMERB?

I thought ROTC scholarships are awarded for a specific school on your list. Is this different across AROTC, NROTC, and AFROTC? From the posts on this thread, it sounds like you are awarded a scholarship, and then picking which school you want to attend with it.

Each branch ROTC program has very different policies on this.

The winner letter for AROTC said a 4-year scholarship was awarded to one of the three colleges listed (which were his top three). When he accepts his offer, he must designate which of the three colleges he wants to schalorship applied to.

I suspect it will happen after the deadline for the winners to accept their offers. My DD received her 3-year scholarship in February and her upgrade email in April. Good luck.
My DS son the same a few years ago. 3 year scholarship at Feb board and after the final board he was upgraded to a 4 year. He did not reach out to try and get a 4 year (he was thrilled with a 3 year!)

Any advice on when/how to approach the possibility of getting a 3 year AD upgraded? Numerous posters have mentioned that happening to them.
There are some 3AD upgraded to 4YR after the 3rd scholarship board if they were on the cusp, and not enough 4yrs were awarded. While a Freshman, it is possible to get a 3AD upgraded to 4YR, but these days, I would say it is unlikely. Each program is different, but if you upgrade a 3AD, then you lose a scholarship that you can give to someone else. Most programs will choose not to upgrade one scholarship winner, when they can have two scholarship cadets instead.

This was an old post of mine, so it's kind of water under the bridge now, but I'm curious about your answer. Why would upgrading a 3AD to a 3.5 or 4 mean that that a second scholarship couldn't be awarded? Or do you mean that a second three-year couldn't be awarded? I mean, couldn't you upgrade a 3AD to a 3.5 or 4 and still have a 2-year or 2.5 year left to give with the same total outlay of dollars as two three-years?

@franknd - "losing the scholarship" is in reference to the school losing it. If you have a 3AD upgraded to a 3.5 or 4, you are basically taking that 3.5 or 4 off the table when it could be given to someone without a scholarship. CC is not going to give the school "credit" for the 3 year that was upgraded.

I think that is how it works.

Okay, I think I understand. So an upgraded 3AD means that the 3AD received from CC goes away (never to return) and transforms into a campus-based 3.5 or 4 year. If that's what he means, then I do understand, and it makes sense why programs wouldn't make that deal. I was thinking that a program could just "add to" the 3AD, but that apparently isn't how it works.
