Way back when, service selection was a somewhat low-key affair. Naturally, there was anticipation and excitement for the future. New ships were being funded in anticipation of a 600 ship Navy! The F-14 was the hot new bird everyone talked about. Brand new SH-60’s Seahawk helicopters were coming down the pike. The nuke sub people already knew their status which left service selection choices to Marine Corps, SWO, Aviation, and a few restricted line billets like Supply Corps and Intelligence. There was and one Med School billet. Mids were called down to, I don’t remember which Hall, by the Midshipmen run radio station in Bancroft Hall, WRNV. Everyone was glued to the radio. The process, coordinated by the Commandant's staff, started after evening meal and celebration ran late into the evening. DJs announced: #1 through #100 (or other similar groupings) –
Come on down! #200 through #300
You’re up! And so, it went until the last person selected. Available ships with their ports, aviation class start dates were written on butcher block paper on an easel and were crossed off as they were chosen. There was running DJ commentary, some funny, some depressing. After selecting there was pizza, beer and music in Dahlgren Hall to celebrate.
Two of my best friends and I selected somewhat late into the evening
. Two of us chose aviation and one SWO. We went back to our rooms, changed into civies and went to celebrate only to find very little beer and slim pickings on the pizza. We thought that we’d fall behind our peers by getting a late starting flight school class. After graduation, I was a stash in Officer Programs and got to visit many college campuses while recruiting. It was quite the contrast from USNA. Joe Gish wound up at NAS Whidbey before reporting to flight school. It was great down time after graduation. My company mate that went SWO fell in love with the amphib community and later went on to command an LSD.
I hope that the Mids start enjoying their many “lasts” after service assignment. Last home field march-on; Last Army-Navy game; Last
whatever. Now the time will really start to fly.
