World Series

Any baseball fans here?
My mother’s uncle (does that make him my “great uncle”?) took me to my first major league game when I was 7. It was the Giants at god-forsaken Candlestick Park, with its green concrete, swirling winds and frigid night air. I loved it. This was back when doubleheaders were a thing, and he brought me to a couple per year. To this day, I love malts and peanuts because that’s what I had back then.

From there I became a lifelong Giants fan. So you can imagine how 2010, 2012 and 2014 were for me. I still love listening to the local broadcast team and I catch a game whenever I’m in SF (that “new” ballpark is just amazing).

The fact that this year’s Giants won a franchise-best and major league-best 107 games, but still fell short of the World Series, is part of the beauty of this game that’s built on failure. 🙂

yes, a game where a player fails 7 of 3 times and that qualifies him for the hall of fame. A game when stepping on a chalk line and crossing bats in the dugout is bad luck. A game with no clock and is played until a winner is declared. America's game.

Bottom of 7 come on Braves! I don’t have a dog in the fight but thought I would take the side of @Devil Doc.
My first major league game was the Padres. Attended one this summer with my Midshipmen and his roomie at the new fancy park on the bay. Still a fan.

Ok they need some discipline at the plate now. Come on!

Bottom of 9 let’s go Braves!!!!!! Pitching is amazing and the recruited infield batting has been on point and quality at bats. Here we go!

I stayed up and watched it all. The last out. The trophy presentations. The interviews. Lots of good side stories on this Braves team.

I went to my first Braves game at 9 years old and Hank Aaron hit his 500th HR that day. Dusty Baker was a 19 year old rookie.

Interesting fact: Dusty Baker spent four years in the Marine Reserve in his first four years in MLB.

I didn't have a dog in the fight this year, but happy to see the Braves win. I do have a Sister and B-I-L down in Atlanta so was cheering for them. However, I did have something of a soft spot for Dusty Baker... I really didn't remember much about his career, but just recognized the name from when I was much younger. Was surprised to hear that he was the second oldest manager to lead a team in the World Series. Maybe next year ---

I thought Dusty Baker was great when he was with the Cubs. He used to smile back then, though. I didn't see him smile at all in this series. Maybe next year.

Not a fan of either team but glad the Braves won. I’m happy for their fans.

I just didn’t want cheaters to win. I want proof that the Astros can win it all without banging on trash cans. This year, the answer is no. Maybe next year.

I liked him too.

He always had that toothpick in his mouth.

Glad he didn’t accidentally swallow the toothpick and choke like my Cubbies did in 2003 and 2004 under his watch.

I will forgive the Asterisks and move on, after the last of the six remaining members of the 2017 cheat-O's leaves the team.

Yuli Gurriel
Jose Altuve
Carlos Correa
Alex Bregman
Lance McCullers Jr.
Francis Martes

*Note: McCullers and Martes are pitchers, so they didn't likely personally benefit from the trash can banging. Altuve supposedly declined the signals and glared at the dugout when it was going on. However, as a team leader, he didn't do anything to discourage others from participating either.

I have no use for Correa, Gurriel and Bregman who all financially benefited from actively participating in the organized corruption of a game I adore.

The only time I have seen a Grand Slam live was with Dusty Baker at Dodger Stadium, Its one of those moments i can never forget
Those were the days.... when you would bring a transistor radio with you to the game and listen to Vin Scully while watching the Dodgers.

Congrats on the win. Might be the last under the "Braves" name though.

I'm a Yankee fan since early childhood even though as a baby, I lived very close to Ebbitts Field (Brooklyn Dodgers) and had no
Yankee fans in the family.

Glad to see the cheaters heading home without the trophy.

Baseball is also the only game where the defense has the ball. And when a player leaves the game he cannot return. And where the dimensions of every field are different.

I read somewhere that game 5 might have been the last one ever played without a DH, depending on how the CBA negotiations go this winter. I know the pitcher ABs are mostly perfunctory, but they do introduce a small wrinkle that will be lost when this rule is inevitably changed and I'll miss that little extra bit of texture in the game.

It feels pretty inevitable when you consider the players want the extra hitter position in the lineup/payroll, the owners want the extra offence to remove the "boring" outs even though they still have to play 27 but whatever, and the pitchers hit about .100 these days. OTOH Grienke got his hit on Tuesday, so there's always that chance that today could be the day. You never know: I was there when Cecil Fielder stole second base against the Twins late one September, and those moments are what make watching the games fun. Whatever, good series, let's get through this off-season and get things moving again.
