2020 Hopefuls

Was wondering how kids are getting LOA and BFEs already? My son has had his full application, passed DODMERBs and the BOG interview complete since September 1. He attended the summer seminar and was a drag at the CV in Sept. Waiting for Congressional Nomination interviews as he applied to 4. I am going to get an ulcer over this waiting!!! LOL We got a TWE for an upcoming event locally and we didn't know it before we opened it and I thought my son was going to pass out! Thank GOD it was just an invite to the event! The USNA or USAFA is all my son has ever wanted since he was 5 years old and wants a life long career with the military. Can anyone share how they are getting these items so soon-LOA and BFE?? Please let us know if they are presidential nominations that helped you as many of us do not qualify under this. Thanks for your help and feed back! To those who got in already......embrace the gift you earned it and thank you for serving our country!
Flying, please do not worry about an LOA as it is not a guarantee as you can read in the other posts. You should not expect to hear anything til after the first of the year. If anyone has an appointment, it is most likely those who have a presidential NOM.

We are in the same boat, DD has had her app completed and she even has a presidential NOM and we havent heard a peep. The waiting is always the hardest. My advice, relax a little, share some wine and all things will be revealed in due time. :)

LOAs do not generally rely on Presidential Noms this time of year, although there may some. LOA recipients walk on water and could probably go to Harvard, MIT, Stanford etc. LOAs are offered, in part, to get these people before they go off to other opportunities.

Edit: Cross posted with FalconsRock. Of course if they already have an appointment, as opposed to the LOA, then it's on a Presidential Nom at this point.

Flying your DS is fine. They send out LOAs this time of year. If they have a Presidential or some other nom such as ROTC they can be issued an Appt. It's nothing to worry about. Remember the large majority of appt candidates won't know until Jan-April. I know reading on these sites it can seem like everyone is getting LOAs sometimes, but that just isn't reality. Even with an LOA they must still obtain a Nom. Sounds like your DS has done everything he is supposed. 4 MOCs? 2 senator and 1 rep... What is the 4th? Or is he also applying to USMMA?

I have a president nom and a fairly competitive application as well as Summer seminar and CVW. Haven't heard anything yet!

I forgot to add that my DD went to USAFASS and was selected for NASS and offered CVW as well. Those events really do not have much bearing, if any, on selection prospects. Lots of relaxing and deep breathing is in order. Enjoy your senior year and don't forget plans B, C, and D. :p Good luck to you Willyboy.

You will need to embrace the wait. The overwhelming majority of candidates, regardless of their nomination source, how competitive their application or these other activities will not hear anything until early spring. That's five months from now and you'll worry yourself sick if that's all your doing.
Enjoy your senior year, work on your alternate plan B, C and understand that this is all part of the process completely out of your control. Don't wish the time away...it will come soon enough.

alot of the LOA / BFE's going out now are for athletes, people with outstanding academics, and people that are in that extremely high standing. TWE's cant even go out until January. Not a terrible thing if you havent gotten one. The majority never gets one. Everyone just has to wait.

Hey I went to USAFASS too! It was a blast. Thank you and best of luck! I'm sure this process is just as stressful for the parents as the candidates themselves.

It's been a tough process. Would love to hear something but I've waited a long time and I can wait a little longer. I guess perspective is everything and there are more ways to serve than through USNA if it isn't meant to be. Thanks for the insight!

Just remember during this wait... As long as you don't have a TWE in hand, you are still in the game. Some folks will see BFEs coming out in large chunks, yet you might still be waiting. Most know by March, but we have seen kids on this board wait into late May. It's rare, but it happens. Enjoy your senior year and focus on plan Bs!

First: Welcome to the forum!

Congrats to your son! For completing the process. The wait seems to be the hard part.

I received a Western Union telegram on April 27th from my MOC. Accepted for admission. I reported June 30th.

Good luck! And don't get an ulcer... Things may get "interesting" as time goes on. My Mom wouldn't let me solo fly an airplane when I was 16. So.... I graduated USNA, completed flight training and flew jets off aircraft carriers including a combat tour in SEA :)

ps Sorry Mom, but I know you were proud of me!

I did let my son fly solo when he was 16! LOL. He has the same goal as yours and I love it! It is hard, all of this, all the process and all the waiting but it will be worth it. God has a plan. We are now dealing with guidance counselors for lacking info on his USAFA application, she said she sent it 2 times already. I know it takes time to process but they said they don't have it and she sent it 11 days ago. I asked her to send it again today after he did last Friday and she hasn't responded to him. Deadline is coming up or he it is over for him in the USAFA if this doesn't get completed. His USAFA interview says the feed back portion is still not complete. He did that Oct 3rd. Do we call the liaison and remind him? My son said no! I say yes! But it's his life. Waiting on Congressional nomination interviews and our plan B NROTC and going to his first of five required and being admitted to colleges(per NROTC requirements) -Purdue for Engineering which is now up in smoke. He was accepted but for an alternative major as they cannot accommodate everyone in to the school of engineering. The other majors offered that had room are education, health and science and liberal arts. How can this college be this full already in early selections? His NROTC application is for engineering. I guess I had no idea colleges wait list and admit but ask for an alternative majors. We were scrambling all day because he has to list 5 college for the NROTC application which is in and be accepted to them in the college of engineering, with Purdue as #1 on that list we now have an open space for another college and the application can be changed as the deadline is not here yet. So we scramble for 3 possibles new colleges and chose 1 to add but need to get it complete for priority registration which is Nov 1. We help build our children all these years and when they don't get their dreams and goals it hits us as parents just as hard. The roller coaster is a good analogy! This forum helps me see I am not alone on this ride! Thank you for all your feedback! I need some wine! Anyone want a glass? LOL

You are right, it is your son's life and if it doesn't concern him there are consequences. We had trouble with our counselors turning in documents in a timely manner as well. My DD camped out on her email and in her office, but she did not budge until I got involved. With a USAFA deadline, there is NO TIME to be shy. It is no skin off the counselor's nose if it is late, but it was sure important enough for my DD that she took control and made it happen. Your son should step up, don't be shy and camp out every day on the counselors door step until the document is verified received. He should also call his admission liaison officer and let him/her know what is going on with his transcripts etc. As far as the ALO's input, it would not hurt to send a friendly email reminder that the deadline is fast approaching. Sometimes they can get very busy and an email could have been overlooked. Like you said, it is his life and he should take it by the horns and make it happen.

Hello,
I am new to this thread. I see people mentioned plans B, C, and D. What do 'plans B, C, and D' mean here? Thanks.

Plans B C and D refer to backup plans given the service academies are Plan A. (i.e., civilian college, ROTC, etc)

What do 'plans B, C, and D' mean here? Thanks.

Plan B, C, D, refer to any other colleges/universities to which your ds/dd is applying. The Academy would be your Plan A; however, if that does not work out in the end, it is important to have fallback options B, C, D etc.

@USNA2020: Thanks for the answer. I have another question for Plan B (i.e., civilian college).

SA is my DS's first choice as Plan A. Since it's not guaranteed, can he try ED application for a civilian college as Plan B?

What if he is lucky to get admission from both SA and civilian college, and my DS wants to go to SA, is it ok to break the ED binding for the civilian college?

Thanks for the info..

This is just my perspective, but personally I wouldn't risk the ED. In the case that he does get accepted, getting out of the binding situation may be tough and not worth it, given that the first choice is the service academy.

On the other hand, if he does not receive an appointment but gets into the ED college, it would still work. Up to you guys though

@USNA2020: Thanks a lot for the info..
Soccer98, if your DS applies ED it IS binding and he should not think he will be able to break his contract even for an appointment in an SA. I would advise against it. If he is accepted to an ED school, he must attend that school and withdraw all other applications, that includes any SA. Read the details carefully.
