DS received an LOA from his first choice the USAFA but he received a NOM from his MOC for his second choice the USNA. He is puzzled by this turn of events but continues to work his plan B (ROTC) and plan C (National Merit Scholarship at Texas A&M). He’s a strong candidate: 800 math/750 reading on first and only SAT, varsity wrestler, drum line captain, class officer and salutatorian. Any observations?
Was you MOC aware of the LOA? Which district are you from? Do you know whether the MOCs coordinate in your district? It's possible the other MOCs that cover your district will end up nominating your son for USAFA?

USAFA said they would inform the MOCs and my DS informed his interviewer of same. He had a great interview: He knew the start time of the Army Navy Game and his interviewer said that the only weakness with his file was his failure to list USMA first among his choices. His representative is Congresswoman Underwood. Senator Durbin coordinates with Senator Duckworth but I don’t know about any further coordination.

USAFA gave your DS an LOA, they can see the noms in hand, and they probably know how the state’s elected officials coordinate.

It is not over for USAFA until they tell him so. They may well decide to use one of the noms they control. If they don’t and USNA offers him an appointment, he can then decide whether USNA is his place, or does he want to re-group, exercise his college alternate and re-apply to USAFA, if that is where his heart and mind lean. He has options.

Hello people of the Service Academy Forums,
So far my application has gone really well and everything has been completed. However, I am starting to worry about the nomination from a Senator or Congressperson. I have seen lots of posts saying they have already had a nomination or have had their interviews, so I don't know what to think.

I know California is a huge state and all, so should I really be worried I haven't heard anything back yet regarding an interview? There is plenty of stuff going on with COVID and the election so I am presuming that they must just be really busy right now definitely with all the holidays.

However, my congressman, Brad Sherman, has also not given me any word on an interview. I live in CA District 30, aka the San Fernando Valley, so there must be tons of applications he has to go through.

Anyway, the main question I really have is if I should be concerned or not that I have not received any information from anyone about the nominations. Should I be worried or is it still too early to tell?

I cannot speak to that district, or any other for that matter as things change each cycle.
I can say that you should only worry about that which is within your control. Did you submit the best application you could in a timely fashion ?
Have you sent a polite email to the point of contact confirming their receipt of your file and application ?
Are you continuing to work on plans B-Z?

I know it is not the answer you are looking for. This process does not involve certainty. And at the end of this cycle, if you don’t get the result you were hoping for, adjust course and chart a path for the next cycle.

There is no requirement for an interview. All elected officials may conduct their nom selection process as they see fit. Typically, the elected official leaves all the legwork to staffers, and to a review panel made up of SA grads and other veteran military. The official may only be slightly involved.

Time to pluck up the confidence to call or email those who will have the answer. Given the challenges in CA right now, I would bet it’s no interview or virtual.

Hang in there. Be sure you apply for the VP nom.

I have done everything to my ability, and am waiting on responses back from the offices! Thanks for the input!

Okay, thank you for the information.

Can't speak for your Congressman, but as to Senators Harris and Feinstein it looks like interviews were held and there have been decisions made. Not sure if that means it is over or not, but as was said above you could check with their offices and CA-30 staffers.

Last weekend Senator Feinstein's office held nomination interviews, and this weekend Senator Harris' office is going to hold interviews.

DS received Sen. Feinstein nomination for USNA in his portal this morning

DS received Sen. Feinstein nomination for USAFA today both via phone message and on his portal. Super excited.... Now we wait for word from the Academy.

We just found out that our DD received the principle nomination from Senator Kamala Harris and due to that our local Congressman will no longer be interviewing her. Is that common? It appears that many candidates have nominations from both Senators and Congressman.

DS nominated by CA Senator Feinstein on Dec 16th to USMA.

You are still in it until you aren't with CA-30 (if they are still behind and there have been no decisions as of yet), VP nom, Superintendent's nom, etc.

However, the Plan B-Z should be fully ready in case you need them as well. Good luck and keep the faith!

DS was declined by Sen. Durbin But has not heard from Sen. Duckworth. Would he be wrong to send Sen. Duckworth’s office a copy of his LOA? Would he be wrong to raise the issue with Rep. Underwood now that she has given him a NOM for USNA? Should he reach out to the USAFA Superintendent? Or the USAFA Director of Admissions who signed his LOA? Thank you for your advice.

This happens. It feels like a gut punch.

The SA typically provides the elected officials with a copy of the LOA. The applicant can always contact an elected official’s staffer to confirm, and provide a copy, if the nomination process is still underway.

The elected officials have complete control over their own process. An LOA may or may not have any influence. For whatever reason, your son was not chosen for the USAFA slate. Your state may have a collaboration policy among the elected officials, where they don’t duplicate names across slates or Academies.

USAFA knows exactly who they have given LOAs to and will note their nom status as slates come in. There is no need for the applicant to contact anyone at USAFA about that, specifically, though he should feel free to contact any of his designated points of contact at any time. USAFA has noms under its own control, such as the VP (he did apply, right?) and others (read Sticky at top of Nomination forum to refresh). If USAFA wants your DS they may “find” a nom for him. They may not.

Every year, there are fully qualified applicants with LOAs who do not get noms, and do not get an offer. That is why alternate plans are encouraged, and if your son still wants USAFA, he re-applies. If he participated in AFROTC, that is another nom source. A significant number of each incoming class are re-applicants. There is no stigma. It shows true desire and grit to keep going after it.

Has anybody received any form of confirmation of receipt of their packets from either of the Ca senators? I have sent mine over a month ago and just now heard back from Harris, still no word on Feinstein. I know they are supposed to send the post card one includes in their packet, but I still have not received mine from either senator. I have called Harris and they told me to resend my packets both electronically and through the mail, Feinstein's office doesn't even pick up the phone. Would love to hear from anybody else that may be in the same boat as me.
Anything from Missouri nomination sources?

If you are in PA, check your emails because Senator Toomey has started notifying people via email about nominations. Please let us (folks in PA) know if you hear anything from Senator Casey.
Did you get a nom? I know my son when he went through the process he only got snail mail notification. DD not expecting from Toomey because thought that was a hard interview.

Our news was through email not snail mail - from Toomey.
