Mids told not to return

Mids will be happy for about a week. Spring at USNA is, IMHO, the very best time of the year, especially for plebes and firsties. Nice weather. Trees and flowers in bloom. Lots of daylight. Major hurdles (e.g., PFT) are done. Summer "training" (usually very fun) is on the horizon. Firsties are counting down the days until commissioning -- getting orders, setting up moves, etc..

Most mids are very active people (in every sense of the word). Sitting at home (especially when they've just been home or elsewhere for a long week) will get old in a hurry.

My plebe is concerned about his academics. Earlier in the semester, Calculus was eating his lunch. Now, he has that handled but Chemistry is the now bullying him. He spends a decent amount of time in EI (Extra Instruction) with his teachers and often attends MGSP (Midshipmen Group Study Program). Going to online classes, those resources will be limited at best.

By the way, I'm pretty proud of myself that I'm learning all of these TLA's (Three Letter Acronyms)

We should be thankful we have these electronic tools. Imagine if this were 40 years ago

> 40 years ago, without the internet, we'd all probably live in ignorant bliss, and everybody would return to the Hall Sunday night. What did we do before smart phones ? I don't even recall leaving a leave address , as I don't think we used leave chits for scheduled breaks.

I attended USNA on the cusp of all the technology. We definitely didn’t have email off the yard. No social media and cell phones were a rare item. Major word was still passed verbally. We did sign out with a leave number and address usually. It would of been a call tree with probably 50% if everyone getting word! I had a company mate who passed away on summer leave and I was a detailer. Trying to get ahold of my classmates to get them back for the funeral was a 3 day process. Now it’s quick emails, tests and DMs... they will eventually get one of them rather quickly unless on a sub or ship with no comms.

Whenever I hear or read someone say they would like to go back to simpler times, you know, no technology, I say are you crazy!!! I love my electronics. I’m sitting here in the glow of a pandemic with my IPad, IPhone, and big TV flipping through the news channels. It would though be a nice bit of nostalgia to see a special request chit filled out in triplicate.

My iPhone 10r is so much better than my old i6 that fell in the drink while fishing on the Potomac river last summer.

I cried more when I lost a prized Daiwa baitcastor in the drink.

I know that there are no answers, but my random ponderings are these: USNA Mids left for spring break. Without their materials. Laptops, books, notebooks. Also will online mean live? As in 8am class on the east coast means class at 4am on the west coast??

My Mid is concerned about not having ANY materials. He cannot be the only one.

Hmmmmmm 🤔

DD has her laptop, a stable internet connection, a couple of textbooks, and the ability to adapt.

What else does she really need?

(Meanwhile, we are considering the reform delay as a gift from above; we get an unexpected 2 week extension of her presence with us.)

Her USNA career will be fine and this experience will expand her experiential toolbox.

(Now if I can just keep DW from diving down to knock on the hatch of her sub if the bloc 1 training goes long...)

This is the Asynchronus vs Synchronus classes issue. My wife and I are working on our online teaching and as we envision it at this point, it will be asynchronus. We have the tools to do online class (WEBEX) but we are both concerned that the bandwidth/tools will be oversubscribed at our school so we're planning to upload text and/or video for the students and will get assignments back from them posted onto the class Blackboard (tm) site.
Luckily, we actually had them uploading assignments last week so we have gotten familiar with the process.

Looking to fly back, get stuff, fly home. Not cheap but 🤷‍♀️ Also seems to contrary to the purpose of keeping them home. Can’t imagine thousands doing that? Will see what happens. I’m just a spectator....

Oh. And the chef.
And the maid apparently.
Thinking about going on strike.

They are midshipmen in the U.S. Navy, training to lead young men and women in combat, and to manage millions of dollars in war-fighting equipment. I have no doubt they will figure it out.

My Mid happens to have her laptop and said most textbooks are online, she's not concerned because she said 'we are all figuring this out together, it will work out'

I agree. DD has also mused if summer blocs will be waylaid by make up classes. I'm sure everything is on the table and only time will tell. Unprecedented events provide unprecedented opportunity for innovation and adaptation as well.

The social media pages are blowing up this morning. Parents trying to analyze the domestic travel ban. Giving out information and dates that are not confirmed. Why can't they just trust that their sons and daughters know enough to follow their orders?
