NASS 2016 Q&A Thread

How should the candidates dress (or not dress) when they show up on the first day of NASS (of course, I know...but maybe some folks have that question)? I have seen a few interesting photos.

Candidates are not being judged based on how the report to Summer Seminar, but one thing to note is that we will make you tuck in your shirts immediately upon arrival (regardless of what you're wearing) except for females wearing skirts (obviously). So instead of wearing those yoga pants or pants without a belt that keep falling down, I would recommend something conservative such as khaki shorts with a collared shirt or button down for arrival. Thanks for making a point of that @usnabgo08.

What kind of evaluations are given by detailers and how much do they weigh in one's application?

We are not at liberty to say what exactly is on the evaluations or the different weights of the evaluations. All I can say is that, they are looking for the kind of character, commitment, and passion that we would want as apart of our family in the Brigade of Midshipmen and would expect to be a good Naval or Marine Corps Officer.

Session 2 has started! DD is participating, and I look forward to sharing news. First observation is that as soon as DD arrived at USNA texting stopped;-). Hope there will be many photos posted on that FB page...

I dropped mine onto the tile in Bancroft from a height of about 8 inches and it shattered... Those things were EXTREMELY brittle.
Wow! What brand is it and what is it made of? Glass?
Can someone upload a picture of it if it is still in one piece?

There was no visible brand on the bottle, but it said "made in China" on the bottom. It was made of cheap plastic. They were pretty small, too. I ended up buying a nice Nalgene from the mid store after I broke mine.

Apparently the issued bottles have been Nalgene in the past but they obviously were not this year.

We have an old NASS Nalgene somewhere in the house. I think the one issued last year was made of "soft" plastic/rubber, nothing like the "grenade" y'all received this year.

Shout out to GoNavyPro!

I can report his report of feedback from his NASS thread went up the chain and the Group working NASS 2016 quickly reacted to make sure all NASS'ters had a designated time last night to call home and let parents know that each kid was checked in and settled for the start of this week's Session.

In our case, DD called home last night just before taps to say that Detailers "told us to call home and check-in ". That made Mom very happy! (Dad too !) She also said her "roomates are great!"

DS said in his squad(?) only three were intact at the end of the week. His cracked after a fall of about 4 inches.

It looks really nice, too bad it won't last...nice kitchen, btw! :thumb:

Thankfully I read this before DD left for Session 2 & she took an extra water bottle from home. Can't wait to see pics on Facebook!

Same here, roommates are great, squad mates are great, and the detailers are great! They're now done with CFA, DD said the BB throw results will be announced later tonight. I hope photos will be posted soon.

A friends DD injured her shoulder the other day and it will keep her from being able to throw, push up/pull up. She can run and think and intends to attend the NASS. Is there more to the program for her to participate or would you suggest cancelling?

There's plenty of other things we do at NASS other than physical fitness. She won't be able to take the CFA and will have to take it later on her own time, but that is not a problem.

I would encourage her to still go since overall she won't get another chance to get to be surrounded by detailers that can answer ANY questions she may have about the academy and for her to get to see the culture within the Brigade of Midshipmen. That's just my opinion, but ultimately it's up to her.

I'm a NASSter from 2nd week here, yes the water bottles are brittle! Bring a good backup! Also do not bring any "civvies" (clothes you have.) Just wear whatever you want the day you get there and bring lots of socks and underwear (as well as an extra pair of crappier shoes.) They are not joking, that is all you need. (They're also not joking about memorizing your rates.) Bringing snacks isn't a bad idea as in between meal times you can get pretty hungry due to all the physical activity. I had seen that in the paperwork it said no snacks in the dorms but the detailers encouraged us to bring snacks back from King. This could change, though. If you're a candidate, I hope you've been practicing waking up early and working on your CFA! Don't worry about bringing anything for worshops. (I thought we would need paper, pencil, etc.) As I said, everything is supplied. Listen, listen, ask questions, and work hard! Have fun!

Yes, you are allowed to have food in your rooms. There are only three meals a day and I promise you the vast majority of detailers always has some kind of food in their rooms to keep them going in-between. Though note that they must stay clean and up to standards.

Also on a separate note, can I change my name to say USNA now?

I'm glad your experience at NASS opened your eyes and turned you away from the darkside
