October 15, 2012 AROTC Board

If we did not receive a scholarship from the first board and we are being re-boarded, will our applications be viewed first since we completed our applications in time for the first board?
!
Check it out...If your file was boarded it was given a score...that score is made up of a number of things.

http://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/the-whole-person-score-what-is-it/

If you were boarded on the first board you have the score you have. You don't get looked at again by the next board. You are just in the pile now. The applicants that get their file in for the second board will be given a score and added to the pile. After the second board offers will be made based on score and the schools you have on your list. So what can you change at this point, not much. You can adjust your list of schools. You can retake your SAT/ACT, but the only place where that will change your score is under the potential 250 points for SAT/ACT. You can't change your interview score or your board member score.

Does anyone know if there is a percentage of the scharships that will be 4year, 3 year and 2 year? If the ratio different from board to board or does it stay constant each time?

I'm sure someone knows, and it changes from year to year, and it depends on how many apply and what schools they have on their list, and how many offers are made from each board, and only 4 and 3 year scholarships are offered to high school applicants and if you knew the percentage of 3 and 4 year offers this year would there be something you would do different? And once the high school process is over any stated percentages would go out the window because now you are talking about pots of money allocated to schools by 8 brigades based on campus scholarship boards and pools of enrolled cadets. If I told you the percentage was 40/60 would that help.

On what basis does CC award 3 Year AD vs. 4 Year scholarships?

So far on this forum, I have come across the following explanations:

--In state (4 year) vs. out of state (3 year AD)
--Likelihood they will get into a particular school
--Likelihood that they will do well in ROTC
--Likelihood they will do well academically at a particular school

Does anyone know what forms the basis of the decision to award a 3 year AD instead of a 4 year scholarship?

Pima,

My son really likes Georgetown and seems to be very excited about the possibility of attending that school on ROTC scholarship, he says they have a great battalion. However, he listed Harvard as his number one choice (a stretch, I know) and Claremont Mckenna as his second choice (a school he really fell in love with). Since filling out the ROTC application, he has really brought up his SAT scores (now a 2290) making both of those schools more of a possibility for him. He was a little bummed not to see Claremont (and probably Harvard too) as an option. What are your thoughts?

Mom421,

Congratulations to your DS on receiving the ROTC scholarship to Georgetown. That's an impressive accomplishment given the tremendous competition for a diminishing number of awards. My DS also received a 4-year scholarship to Georgetown this time 2 years ago. It too was not his first choice; he had his heart set on going to West Point. Now in his second year at Georgetown, he can't speak highly enough about it and the ROTC program there. I'm sure you're aware of Georgetown's strong academic reputation, but you may not know that the ROTC battalion was awarded the top unit in the country just this past year. It seems to be a tight-knit group of very bright cadets. I'm sure my son would be more than happy to share his experiences as both a student and cadet. If your son would be interested in talking to him, then just let me know and I'll figure out a way to pass on my son's contact info.

Ulysses,

Thank you so much for the offer. I think my son would love to be able to talk to a current cadet at Georgetown. Unfortunately, I can not PM yet because I do not have enough posts, otherwise I would PM you his email information. Perhaps, you could PM me? Also, I would love to hear your thoughts on the school and the program from a parent's perspective.

Thanks again,
Mom421

ArmyDaughter,

Thanks for the PM. I am unable to respond via PM because I do not have enough posts yet.

However, I did want to mention that I have read elsewhere on the forum that of the 3,000 Army ROTC scholarships to be awarded this year, 2,000 of them will be 3 Year AD. I may be spreading misinformation, but I did see this elsewhere.

Also, your son goes to a great school. How does he like the school? How does he like the ROTC program there?

He's not there yet. :big grin: He is just getting the scholarship this go around for fall of 2013. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I have read the same thing about 3 vs. 4 year scholarships but also read that more 4 years are awarded on the first board. Of course that was for last year's pool and things are very different this year.

Mom 421,

It looks like I'm in the same boat with the PM limitations. Let me post a couple more messages and I'll PM you once I meet the threshold.

What is the score threshold for receiving 250 points for SAT/ACT?

Thanks for all the helpful information thus far. This process woould have been a lot more difficult without all you wonderful folks on these boards.

Could it be that they released all the scholarship notifications for the first board in just one day (Friday), seem pretty quiet today.

And it still seems to me that those who acknowledged receiving a scholarship are all east coast based (or perhaps South). I haven't seen any indication if any award recipients are west coast based. Still curious.

I've been reading this forum for a while and I checked my scholarship status online last night (I'm in the Bay Area). I've received a scholarship (won't know 3/4 yrs. until letter) to UCSB and am now just waiting on the official letter. Good luck everyone

Looks like this one is on the West Coast.

Congratulations

Good luck to those waiting

I checked my scholarship status online last night [Sunday night]. I've received a scholarship
Had you checked Friday or Saturday thoughout the day? Don't want to assume you did and that the offer appeared mid-day on Sunday. If you handn't checked prior to Sun PM, I am going to assume the status changed on either Friday or Saturday am.

I hadn't checked until Sunday because I was just waiting for the mail so yeah it mustve been updated mid-day Sun. 1st rounders will probably get it in the mail this week

We are in the Great Lakes region. My DD's status changed Friday morning and I just got the mail. Her offer was in there!!
It's killing me not to open it to see whether she got 3 or 4 year, and she won't be home till later tonight because of after school stuff. Trying to be patient:rolleyes:

You're a good parent! But don't you have any bright lights around to hold it up to?

My son got his letter today. It is for a 4 year sholarship. The website had only his first choice listed, but the letter indicates he can choose from any of the three choices he applied for.

We are very excited. Thanks for all the help we have gotten here. I know as we start the waiver process I'll be back asking more questions.
