October 15, 2012 AROTC Board

We are in the Great Lakes region. My DD's status changed Friday morning and I just got the mail. Her offer was in there!!
It's killing me not to open it to see whether she got 3 or 4 year, and she won't be home till later tonight because of after school stuff. Trying to be patient:rolleyes:

Congratulations to your daughter.

If she received her letter already then the notifications must have been sent out Thursday or Friday. This looks to be a bit different then previous years where the status changes occured over a 3 day period then the letters were sent.

I would assume since letters have started to be received that the notifications for the Oct. Board have ended.

Good luck to everyone on the Jan. Board.

Congrats szeuchuan! :thumb:

:tomcat:

Ready for takeoff to college, eh?

hopeful2017parent, congratulations to your DD, and kodiakisland, congrats to your DS! :thumb:

DS just opened letter. 4yr to VMI or Norwich. I think his 2nd and 5th choices. We are in NY. His dream was Texas A&M

Is it possible that cadet command held out on results for the east coasts? Especially hard hit areas like NY/NJ/CT. Only wondering because I haven't heard much about awards on the east coast, specifically the north.

Don't know. But I wouldn't read much into having not heard anything. Many people are without internet access so cannot check their status. I'm sure the mails are a bit slower than normal in that region as well. So it could just be that folks haven't yet discovered they received a scholarship.

I would hope that they give those in the hard hit areas of the east coast a few more days to respond due to the fact the mail will probably be slow.....and some don't even have a mail box anymore.

If your in an area that is effected you might try calling the battalion at your #1 school and see if they can update you on your status, though I would imagine if you can read this post you would be able to check your status.

DS just got home and opened his letter. He got offered a 4 year scholarship to either his first choice school or his fourth. Only the fourth was on the status page. So, it was a particularly excited young man jumping around the kitchen.

Congratulations to your son, I remember a day like that, fun to watch.

Galvodog, congrats to your son, even though he wasn`t able to get his 1st choice.

armydaughter, congratulations to your DS.

She finally got home! 4 years to her first choice! It's proudly displayed on the fridge next to her LOA from USNA, just like her grade school papers used to be:shake: So proud of her! Thanks everyone for all the help and encouragement given on this board:thumb:

I'm from VA and I recieved the official letter today from Cadet Command. I recieved 4-year scholarships to University of VA (1st choice), University of California-Berkeley(6th choice) and Virginia Tech (7th choice).

Interesting from a VA resident perspective.

UVA is considered a Public Ivy University on par academically with Berkeley, but VT is an SMC.

Congrats!

Congrats to your daughter and good luck with the agonizing decision process (if it is that).

Received my official letter today as well. 3 year AD to UVA (my first choice), or 4 year to UT Austin (my second or third choice). Currently excited, but wishing I didn't have to decide by Dec. 2!

I received my letter today. The website showed only KU (my first choice.) I also received 4 years to K-State and three year AD's to Oklahoma and Texas Christian University. (These are the all the ones I applied for.)

Quick question: My letter says I am an engineer winner. If I go to KU, I will most likely major in economics but if I go to K-State I will major in engineering. Does the fact that I am engineer winner mean I need to major in engineering at KU? (which I am happy to do because I like their engineering school almost at much as their economics classes.)

That is my understanding. You should confirm this with the ROO at Kansas, since that is where you want to study Econ and not Engineering. Your award is specific... it is for studying Engineering.

Check with the ROO and PMS at each school. Tell them what you plan to Major. Find out what each says and how to proceed.

I assume you listed an engineering ADM on your application.

Check with each, only they will be able to give you the options.

Whew! Glad that worked out for you. I know you were happy to open that letter and also see UVA in there. Congratulations! :thumb:

You don't have to truly decide. You just have to say yes to one of them. If you do not have a personal preference, you should choose the most expensive option. If you change your mind later, or do not get accepted to a school or academic program, you will still have some wiggle room to transfer the scholarship.

Marist, of course, is absolutely right and I wholeheartedly endorse his view.

Another thing to keep in mind as you decide is "bad case" scenarios. Perhaps you decide ROTC is not for you, or your injured and cannot continue, or you can't keep up academically, or maybe even you do something stupid when you think no one is looking and are disenrolled.... which school do you want to continue your education at on your own dime? Not saying any of this necessarily applies to you, but it does happen to others. My son's NROTC Freshman cohort was about 45 MIDN. In his sophomore year it's now down to 19 for all of the above reasons. I expect it will be even lower by the end of the year.
