Army ROTC offers

Post's relating recent changes to their status showing they have been offered a scholarship I would imagine are from those who may not have checked their status until recently. It may also have taken CC a while to get all the updates input to the system.

Now that the schools are being posted I would think that there will be no further offers for this board.

For those that have seen the schools show up on your status page, was there only one school listed or were you offered multiple schools.

Looks like most have received their top choice so far, thats great and congratulations to everyone.gravitationally challenged

Gravitationally Challenged....Now that's funny.

DS status now updated to include only 1 school (instate public). Not his initial top choice, or even where he interviewed, but still very happy to have this opportunity!

Sounds like they may be rolling this out by ROTC Brigade/Battalion. This appears to be a change from last year.

Congrats to all who are learning about their scholarship!

And congrats to all who will be selected in the next board! Yes, there WILL be many offers extended in the next board!!

Got my scholarship to U of Colorado!

However, I was admitted to Duke University under their binding Early Decision program, so I must attend Duke (which was my number one choice on the ROTC application). What are the odds that I may be able to transfer any portion of my scholarship to Duke's ROTC program?

Is the U of Colorado an In State School for you.

It could be difficult since the schools are not in the same Brigade.

If Duke is more expensive then U of Co. that will make it difficult as well.

Since you have not received your letter yet you don't know if the scholarship is a 4 year or 3 year. If it is a 3 year you can try and see if they can change it to a 3 year to Duke if Duke is more expensive, the chances are still slim.

Duke may have filled it's allotment for scholarships which could be another reason the school was not offered. The PMS at Duke may not have listed you as an applicant they would accept.

As you can see there a lot of reasons some schools are offered and some are not. The only thing you can do is talk with the ROTC battalion at Duke and see if they would accept a transfer, you do not submit the transfer request to Duke, it needs to be done through Cadet Command.

Watch the threads, now that the schools are being listed there will be a lot of applicants asking about transfers, Watch for Clarkson and MaristCollege to post, they have the best information regarding transfers.

This is very helpful! Thank you for the information :thumb:

I agree with Jcleppe, contact Duke today.

Duke is private, have you received your merit/FA packet yet. Usually ED many of the applicants get merit. I know of one AFROTC scholarship recipient that turned down the scholarship because they financially didn't need it due to the amount Duke offered. That same yr., another student who didn't apply for ROTC also got the full ride to Duke, both will graduate this yr. The one that turned it down, did enroll in AFROTC, and will be commissioned, he just wanted the time as freshman to decide if the military was for him. His fear was taking the scholarship from AFROTC would tie him and if 2 yrs later he wanted out the merit from Duke would not be there.

Re: Duke ED

In theory, if you applied to Duke ED then you don't "need" the scholarship to attend. You can still participate in ROTC without the scholarship, if you are still interested in a military career.

On the other hand, are you still waiting to hear about regular financial aid from Duke? If that ends up not meeting your financial need, then I believe you can back out of Duke and attend your in-state school on the ROTC scholarship.

DS status now updated to include only one school. Instate (Michigan State University) and was his #2 choice. His #1 choice is a smaller instate school with lower costs and has merit scholarship $ (interviewed & PT test at this school). As a nursing major he thought the smaller school was a better fit. Are nursing scholarships being given out mainly to Large ( Big Ten, DIV.I ) universities over smaller schools? If he wanted to try to transfer this Scholarship to the lower cost school, what steps would he take?

Contact the ROO at the other school and ask if they would accept him in their program. You will need to apply for the transfer through cadet command, the ROO will help you with getting that process.

Is the other school in the same state, if so it will be in the same Brigade, the fact that the cost is less will help as well. These two things will up his chances of getting a transfer. Transfers are harder to get these days and without the above criteria it is almost impossible. The first thing to do right away is contact the #1 schools ROO ask them if there is room in their Nursing scholarship allotment for your son and then with their blessing move on to the next step. Don't put this off contact them soon.

Good luck

Blind, I understand your position about theory and needing assistance, but for some they still apply believing if they do not get merit they will go and take 100K in debt in loans, do work study, etc.

Some parents and applicants will say if this is your dream college, and if I have to sell a kidney we will find a way.

jcleppe, thank you for the information. His #1 choice is also instate. Are nursing scholarships treated differently ( slots per school and only to certain schools)?

I'm sorry i am not up to speed on the nursing scholarships, the best bet is to talk to the ROO, they will have the up to date information on the nursing program.

There is a cadet that is in the nursing program that is a senior and posts on this board, I'm sure I am spelling this wrong but here goes, Aglahad, if you can find a post from him on the board send him a PM, he might be able to answer your questions better then I.

Good Luck

Just checked, yep I spelled it right, Aglahad

rj,

Congratulations on Duke ED.

Here's what I think will happen:

- you get the emails of the PMS and ROO at Duke and send them a two paragraph email with Subject Line: ROTC Scholarship to U Colorado, but admitted Duke ED, my 1st choice.
- Now, pick up the phone to f/u your email, and have a nice chat with both. Ask for their help, and tell them you'll accept the Award to Colorado and immediatley request a transfer of the Award to Duke (this assumes neither has told you they won't support that).
- Accept the Award to Colorado
- Petition CC to transfer the Award to Duke.
- CC will then: 1) approve 4 yr. Award transfer, or 2) approve 3 Yr. AD Award at Duke, 3) delay decision, or 4) Deny the request.

I do not think Duke ROTC (or Northwestern, or MIT, or Stanford, etc.) finds it easy to fulfill their potential impact on campus due to the sheer difficulty of gaining admission to Duke. I'm sure every year Cadet Command awards several scholarships for use at Duke, and then the future cadet doesn't get in. I would imagine the ROTC group there is under 50 cadets in size, and that the cadets actually enrolled at Duke, rather than enrolled at the cross town affiliate school, is probably under 30. I'm sure they'd welcome a new cadet.

To your favor is a development within Cadet Command over the past 18 months or so to spend Private School ROTC scholarship money increasingly at elite privates, with the barrier of course being that hardly anyone actually gets in through admissions!

ARMY ROTC Scholarship Letters

Has anyone received their Army ROTC acceptance letters yet? Still waiting in CA

I think they still use the Pony Express to get mail out to these parts.

Some have reported getting the letters, unfortunatly the ponies get tired coming out to the west coast.

Should be here soon.

Letter arrived yesterday. 3yr AD. Michigan State University.
DS is very excited. Academic discipline is nursing.

I am a bit confused on how the 3yr AD works . Letter states: Beginning your sophomore year of college you will receive a 3 yr scholarship without reapplying, if you meet the following eligibility criteria; enroll in MS 1 classes, grade point, and Line "d" of the CC letter states" Be recommended by the PMS. Can anyone go into more detail on how the 3yrAD are handled on campus. Will future budget cuts affect this 3 yr scholarship from happening ?

It is actually pretty simple, we as humans look for deeper issues.

Basically, she must fulfill 3 requirements
1. Be in AROTC as a freshman
2. Maintain the min cgpa
3. Get the PMS to check the box "support"

#3 is the one to worry about because it is the "out" for them. If they don't recommend than they will not be receiving the scholarship. However, before panic steps in, they really don't try to not give the scholarship...it is bad for morale.

Starting her sophomore yr., she will receive the tuition assistance, book allowance and monthly stipend like a 4 yr recipient.

Yet, there is still one more stipulation...pass the PFT.

Finally, I would not concern myself about the budget because in essence, the Army is placing that money aside, think an escrow account. Could it disappear? Of course. Chances of that occurring is not something I would less a second of sleep over.

Thank you prima for your reply. I will now be able to sleep much better knowing this!

My son will have no problem passing PFT test , he should be very close to 300pts when arriving in the fall.

I do expect the grades to be a bigger issue due to the competitiveness of the Nursing School at MSU. He is aware of this and the grades needed to succeed: 2011 incoming class average gpa was 3.65.

Once again, I thank all of the people on this forum!
Your insights and knowlegde of this process has been incredibly helpful :)
