I recently received a LoE from West Point. I understand that this is a good sign for my odds of admission, and that it qualifies me for an overnight visit, but does not mean much else officially. I also know that I was probably one of the earlier from my class to receive such a letter, having gotten it in early September.

I'm wondering if this could mean I would be "on the slate" for a Letter of Assurance in the next few months. I realize that the end goal is an appointment, not an LoA, but I'm just curious. Also, I noticed that the overnight trip invitation mentioned that they are scheduled for Monday through Thursday. Would this mean that they begin Monday through Thursday, or must take place within Monday through Thursday? I would like to do one Thursday afternoon and Friday morning for scheduling reasons, if possible.

Any other information I didn't ask about or mention in this post would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

LOA's are entirely a mystery so no point worrying about it or trying to predict it. In the end, they don't matter, just the appointment.

As for the visits, they can happen anytime between Monday and Thursday, but the actual visit itself is about a day and a half - they start at 8:20AM and then end at 12:30PM the following day. I don't know if that means you can do it Thursday and end on Friday - maybe someone else can answer that or you can contact admissions.

I’m pretty sure only around 100 LOAs are offered (I read that somewhere…?). They started July 19th this year, and I received mine pretty late, on 8/1. Chances are now they are done issuing LOAs.

Do not think about LOAs...focus on completing your best application.

Been here a long time and have never seen or heard the “100 LOAs” stat. No one here truly knows the exact criteria for LOAs, nor the full rhyme or reason. This I do know: DD received a USMA LOA in March. She knew a couple friends from SLE who also got LOAs in the spring. LOAs are used to build the desired class, and there isn’t a “sorry, we’re all out” approach to it.

My son received an LOE in August and then an LOA on September 1 (right after his DODMERB info posted). So, keep working on your app and other requirements if it’s isn’t complete. Good luck!

Ah, I see now. Was your DD CO’27 or 28? It would be pretty crazy to see an LOA issued right around the time the candidate kit opened up for CO’28s.

Class of 2022. She got her USMA LOA at the height of the cycle. Same with USNA LOA. USAFA LOA was even later — in late April. Again, there’s no evidence that LOAs “run out.” They’re used strategically, as needed, to build the class the SA wants.

Traditionally USMA issued LOA's to recruited athletes, qualified minority candidates, and a few others at the RC's discretion - some RC's issued them and some didn't, but the total was always very small.

In recent years there seems to have been somewhat more LOA's in the third category (still a small number), but the rhyme and reason of who gets them and who doesn't is a mystery.

Class of 2027 here. I received an LoE in October of last year, and never got a LoA, but I was accepted that following January. Just my personal experience, but as far as I know the LoA system is very random, so you never know. For now just finish the application.

MY son received his LOA September 2022, completed CFA by deadline in November, and found out at the overnight visit tour in November that he had a nomination from one of the state senators. Second week of December, his school principal received the call from Congressman, that we was accepted at the same time he got email from West Point. He had 3 nominations (Senator, Congressman, and JROTC)

I'd recommend not thinking about LOAs. You received a LOE, which demonstrates that you are competitive. Like everyone said, focus on completing your admissions packet and staying healthy/fit. Highly recommend you take the overnight visit. Depending on when your visit is, you might get a little surprise like previous applicants who visited and were given a black rectangular thing (wink wink)

If it makes you feel any better, I received a LOE and never received a LOA. Received my BFE around late January/early February.
