Hi MABlue,
Would you mind sharing what IGEP is? Thanks so much!
It’s all on USNA.edu. Use google to search for graduate programs, and IGEP and VGEP should come up.

If you haven’t yet read every page, link and menu item on USNA.edu, your primary source, most answers are there.

Thank you so much Capt MJ,
We will be exploring the graduate programs today. I appreciate your time!

There are also many, many threads here on SAF about post-grad programs. The majority of officers get their Master’s after their first few operational tours, through a variety of methods, not right out of the commissioning source.

Try a Google search with “site:www.serviceacademyforums.com” in your search string to find those threads.

IGEP is the Immediate Graduate Education Program, which allows USNA grads to go directly to a 1 or 2 year graduate program at a civilian institution prior to entering the Fleet. There are ~20 spots each year for IGEP.

Hi Toserve 2025,

Glad to hear you are in the Midwest. My DD was born there and has been on the West Coast for the past 10 years. But she's a Midwestern at heart. She's leaning the MIT route for a few different reasons but still working through that decision. Best of luck to your DD!

I went with USNA. I’m currently a plebe three weeks into the academic year (and through plebe summer). I think I made the right choice for me but I would be a liar if I said I haven’t questioned my decision at times. It always seems like the grass is greener elsewhere. My goal as of now is to select Marine Air and hopefully go to grad school at MIT, though this is far away. I ultimately decided based on the people. After the admitted students weekend at MIT, I realized I felt more at home with the type of people who comprise the brigade of midshipmen. Both routes offered a commission, the opportunity to serve my country, the opportunity to lead service men and women, and a great education. USNA offers an entire student body of people who are committed to these things. I chose to surround myself with people I aspire to be like and that’s what I found here at the academy.
Hello all! I am resurrecting this thread with perhaps my final update on this very long yet rewarding journey (which is also just getting started)! About a year and a half ago, I provided an update of my situation and offered some advice. I still stand by that advice. I just wanted to share the outcomes of my experience and show that regardless of your decision, you can end up where you want.

This past June, I commissioned into the United States Marine Corps alongside my classmates. Many people often talk about the feeling of tossing your cover into the air after the three chants... it's pretty nice. :) My journey towards earning a commission and pursuing a graduate education ultimately paid off. While I am not currently at MIT, I earned a spot to pursue a masters degree in systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. I have the opportunity to perform cutting edge research at a top notch institution. I get the added challenge of completing a two year program in just one year, but there's a reason we worked on all of those time management skills at USNA. I service selected Marine Corps aviation, so I will be attending TBS next fall (after earning my degree) and then reporting to Pensacola for flight training in 2024. I will hopefully get to use my education to impact to future of Naval Aviation.

In short, if you set your mind to it, you can make it happen. Hopefully this serves as proof that so long as you tirelessly work towards your goals, you can get there. Good luck to the USNA Class of 2026 as they begin their journey at the academy, and best of luck to all of the applicants for the USNA Class of 2027. Semper Fi!

I think you made the right decision …. Where you place yourself has to “Feel Right” … far better to have more likeminded people who can support and bolster each other.

Thank you for showing your servant leadership chops and coming back to close the loop. Your “been there recently” advice is invaluable to those facing multiple forks in the road. It won’t surprise you we see similar posts every cycle.

When you go to a Quaker football game at historic Franklin Field (which everyone should do once), you will hear a familiar tune. Penn has a song with the same melody as "The Goat is Old & Gnarly".

Strangely, it is the same melody as the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". . .
"Glory Glory Hallelujah
"Glory Glory Hallelujah
etc"
