MOCs can nominate in a couple different ways.

1- Principal with numbered alternates. If the principal nominee is qualified, he is offered appointment. If not qualified, the next alternate is offered, and keep moving down the list until a qualified candidate is found.

2- Principal with competitive alternates. Again, if Principal is qualified, he is offered appointment. If not, the 9 alternates all compete for appointment with West Point deciding who gets the appointment.

3- Competitive. All 10 nominees compete, with West Point deciding which 1 gets the nomination. Most MOCs use this one, as it assures the least "political" favoritism.

Just for reference - competitive slate is the most common - with about 70-75% of MOCs using this method. It allows the most flexibility to the SAs.

From my understanding, please anyone correct me if I'm wrong, MOCs can choose a "competitive slate" option where they have a top 10 list of candidates they submit to the various academies and then the academies pick the best ONE from the list who then receives the actual nomination. OR, MOCs can choose who they feel is the best ONE and that candidate receives the nomination.

Seeing as my area is highly competitive and qualified, the MOC selects 10, and, in theory, my assigned academy (USNA) picks one per vacancy. However the academy is known to pick 6,8, and sometimes all 10, of the nominees to appoint in my area to compensate for less competitive areas.

Received two nominations, one from Sen Feinstein and one from MOC, both to USMA. No LOA though, so now we're playing the waiting game.

I am in a similar situation, but I have two to Air Force one from MOC and Senator in IL

Still have not heard from Rep Connolly (VA-11) or Virginia Senators.

I received a nom from Sen Warner to usna and my friend received a Kaine nom to usafa within the last two weeks. We are both from VA-10.
Did you receive it in mail? Is it updated on your portal?

Congratulations! Did Senator Warner state what kind of nomination? Did you receive the principal nom or is it a competitive slate of 10 he is submitting?
I believe Senator Warner's slate is competitive. From his website:

"Offers of appointment are made by the admissions office on a competitive basis measuring the overall qualifications and eligibility of all nominees."

I'm a USMA applicant from MA-06. Representative is Seth Moulton and senators are Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. I got an email from Moulton and a call from Markey recently about interviews, but nothing from Warren. Has anyone heard from her? Thanks!

Good luck we went through this LAST year(2021) and still haven't heard from Warren. Markey responded and was good with corresponding along the way.

PA16 came in mail today. DS yes from Smucker for USMMA. Now if we can quit getting these stupid remedials from DODMERB!! They now want a letter saying his pneumonia from August is gone. After a season of X-Country? Really??

Congrats jaglvr but now I am concerned. I interviewed with Representative Smucker's review board in late november and I still haven't heard anything back. The Coordinator said I could expect to hear back as late as mid-January. I was told by a few members on the board that I have an excellent chance of appointment since I have an LOA to USMMA.

Has anyone heard from MOC Comstock (VA-10) yet?

No. You? DS heard "end of the month".

Merry Christmas to all! It was a very merry Christmas for my son as he received a nomination to both USAFA and USMA from Congressman Rothfus (PA-12). Have not yet heard from Senators Toomey or Casey yet but also heard they will not be notifying until the week of January 8th or so. Question - we have heard, they coordinate with the nominating sources so they do not double nominate therefore we do not expect DS to receive any additional nominations. The question is -- is one nomination type (i.e. congressman or senator) "better" than the other or are they all pretty much "equal"? Thanks!

Could be tomorrow due to holiday?

Congrats on LOA... jealous!

DS is also in a state that coordinates nominations between MOCs. We had originally assumed that senatorial nomination was better, but found out that our congressman actully had first choice of applicants, so getting the congressional nomination was akin to getting selected in the first round of the draft.

As long as you have a nomination, any nomination, you have fulfilled the nomination requirement. I wouldn't spend any additional time/energy worrying about which type of nominations are better. Enjoy the holidays and focus your time and energy into those things that you have control over (e.g., completing application requirements per established timelines, doing well in current classes, staying in shape, staying out of trouble, Plan B, Plan C)... Good luck.

Does anyone know if Congressman Rothfus (PA -12) uses a principal or competitive slate?

Thanks for this information. If the majority of MOCs use this method it would seem that candidates cannot really count being on the slate as having a nom. Correct?
