Very generally speaking the competitiveness of your district is correlated to the median income and school achievement profiles. Regardless of state the more affluent areas with top performing schools produce more candidates with high SAT/GPA etc etc. Remember that congressional districts are similar population via national census count so the total candidate pool is about the same size for all House Representatives. Higher population states dilute the nomination odds for the 2 senators.
